FEBRUARY 2006 Macey composed the first short story posted to Gothic Christianity, A Question of Faith. If you haven’t already had the opportunity to do so I would like to encourage you to read it. As a fiction writer, I love the opportunity to interact with and learn form other writers. I particularly admire Macey and her work and I think you will too. David: What types of stories do your write? Macey: Horror, young adult, children’s, romance, non-fiction, (humor, self-help, and personal) David: What writers have influenced you? Macey: Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen King, Christopher Pike, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Rob Zombie, William Faulkner David: How many books have you written? Macey: 2.5: SACRIFICE (published by Amber Quill Press [www.amberquill.com]), THE BOX (still searching for a publisher), and am currently about halfway done with the sequel to SACRIFICE. David: Please tell us about them? Macey: SACRIFICE is set in Grimshaw, a small, rural southern town that sells its soul to the Devil—literally, by sacrificing its children in exchange for personal gain. The central protagonist, Angel, a local teenager, and her best friend Peter learn of the town’s bloody secret when searching for Angel’s missing father, and try to expose that secret while avoiding becoming the next victims of the ritual. THE BOX is just the opposite of SACRIFICE as it is set in Chicago and focuses on supernatural rather than realistic terror, and on a male teenage drug addict, Ben rather than an innocent girl. An age-old curse befalls Ben when he acquires a box and skull spellbound by a witch from colonial Salem. The curse terrorizes him with life-threatening hallucinations that only he can see, and that few others view seriously because they mistake the hallucinations to be drug induced. Ben must figure out how the curse works and stop it, or risk it stealing his freedom, perhaps even his life. The third book is the sequel to SACRIFICE, and I am not comfortable disclosing much, including its title here, particularly because I don’t want to ruin SACRIFICE for those who haven’t read it. I will say that the sequel is told from the third-person point of view of Peter, and that it picks up right where the end of SACRIFICE leaves off. Realistic elements and supernatural elements are both present in the sequel. David: Where can we go to read excerpts? Macey: Currently, excerpts are available only for SACRIFICE, and they can be found at www.maceyshouseofhorror.com. Excerpts for the others will be available upon publication. David: How can we purchase them? Macey: Readers who wish to purchase a non-autographed copy of SACRIFICE may do so at amberquill.com/Sacrifice.html. For an autographed copy, they should email me at horrorfied@earthlink.net with my first name “Macey” in the subject line or email body. David: What made you decide to become a writer? Macey: I grew up at the end of dirt road so desolate that I had no childhood neighbors, or even cable TV. I learned to entertain myself through writing. As I grew up and went to school, fellow students, teachers, and my family, especially my grandmother and mother, kept telling me that I had a talent and that I should pursue it. I did, and well, I love it. It is hard to imagine doing anything else. David: Macey, thank you so much for contributing to Gothic Christianity. I wish you much success in your career as a writer.
