For Steve Irwin

On a beautiful September afternoon, I was resting on the couch in the den when the phone rang, and I was told of Steve’s death.

I couldn’t believe it.

In an instant I knew that one of the finest protectors of wildlife, a warrior for endangered species, and one of the finest human beings of our generation was gone.

I thought of all the adventures that will never happen, and all the animals that might not be saved unless someone, unless maybe everyone is willing to step up to the plate and care as he did.

Steve Irwin wasn’t a goth, and maybe wildlife conservation isn’t high on the goth-o-meter, but I can’t help but feel our world is diminished now that he is gone, and I hope that—goth or not—we will all care maybe a little more about our planet and all of its inhabitants now that the shining star that did our job for us has faded.

We’ll miss ya mate.
